My First Blog-Week 1

During the first class, we went over future assignments and discussed our memories of language arts growing up and books that influenced us.When it comes to memories of language arts in elementary school, all I remember is liking it. I loved reading. I loved writing. I read so much when I got to first grade that my teacher had me start reading those basal reader-textbooks. The big ones with the long stories and comprehension questions afterwards. We never really used them as a class, but boy did I read like 7 different ones from front to back. I just loved reading and would work as fast as I could to finish reading before we moved onto the next thing. I think this is why other subjects came so easily for me, especially writing.

I feel like when you read, your brain is able to learn other things easier. This is why I want to be a kindergarten or first grade teacher--I think reading has such a huge impact on how students learn. This last year working in an elementary school, I really tried to pay attention to students' habits, what I learned about their home lives, how much they enjoy reading, how easy it is for them to learn, how easily they stay focused, etc. Guys, reading literally improves every single one of these, from what I saw. The students who enjoyed reading-even at home by themselves-were able to focus longer. They were less disruptive, caught on to concepts easier, and just genuinely seemed to enjoy learning in nearly every subject.

What makes me sad about this is knowing not everyone has these resources. Some kids don't have parents that can afford to buy them books. I'm thankful for the public library, but a lot of parents don't know/aren't willing to go there and get books for their kids. The first book set I'd say was influential in my life is the set of the Junie B. Jones books. I read every single one of those books over and over. I thought they were so funny. And, I was a fast reader so I would always try to make it my goal to try and finish one in a night when I started it. I loved reading and still do. I'm always looking for new books to read and I believe reading in general had a huge impact on my love for learning growing up.
