Lesson Planning Reflection-Week 5

Oh, lesson planning. This is actually my favorite part of teaching because I love coming up with meaningful, exciting things for my students to do. However, I always seem to get overwhelmed or not know where to start when I'm being graded for my lesson plans. It's like a cloud comes over my creativity and blocks all my ideas. These lesson plans have been particularly hard because of everything going on in my personal life. I sit down and not only is my creativity gone but my will to do anything right now is gone. Pain medicine leaves me sleeping most of the day, which isn't really ideal when you're enrolled in full time college and trying to get caught up on finances and in other classes.

I started out my lesson planning by first, choosing my grade. I really enjoy working with the younger students, so I decided to do 1st grade. I would like to student teach in first grade so I thought it would also be nice to become more familiar with the standards. I chose my unit based on something I was passionate about in hopes I could pass the passion down onto the students. For my unit plan, I chose a poetry unit. I feel like poetry is so overlooked. I often see students who don't like to read or write come out of their shells when poetry is involved. It gives them freedom to express how they're feeling, which most people enjoy doing even if they don't know it. Poetry units are great because integrating other subjects can become much more natural. When I think of poetry I think of reading, writing, art, music, technology. I can even think of a few ways to incorporate art or science, if needed. In this unit, my students get to read some famous poetry, create poetry of their own, and create artwork among other things to go along with it.

This poem is a great example of a child feeling sad and feeling comfortable getting those feelings out in the form of poetry. I think many children would feel this way if poetry was more common. My 5th grade teacher encouraged poetry outside our unit and would always respond to our journal responses...especially if they were poetic!
